Sylvia Ann Thorp Humble

 
Sylvia Ann Thorp Humble was born on October 17, 1942 in Corpus Christi, Texas and passed away on July 11, 2005, in San Antonio, Texas. She was sixty-two years old. Sylvia was the daughter of Lowell Stillman Thorp and Gladys McCraw Thorp. Sylvia was married to Leonard Fisher Humble from September 1964 until 1997. She is survived by three children: Peter Alexander Humble (San Antonio, Texas), Sharon Nicole Humble (Berwyn, Pennsylvania), and Suzanne Michele Humble-Davies (Friendswood, Texas); and five grandchildren: Luke, Emma and Sarah Humble; Katherine Davies; and Ryan Jones. She is also survived by two brothers: Charles Thorp and Michael Dennis; and two sisters, Patricia Barrier and Jennifer Colley. An accomplished musician, Sylvia made history in Corpus Christi as the first female drum major of the Wynn Seale Junior High School marching band and again as only the third female drum major of the W.B. Ray High School marching band, including during the Fall 1959 football season in which Ray High School won the State Championship. Sylvia attended Abilene Christian College and graduated from Southwest Texas State University, where she studied music and science, with a B.A. in Education. Through the years, she worked as a stay-at-home mother, a middle school science teacher, and the owner of a travel agency. She loved animals and tried her hand at raising a menagerie of farm animals and exotic birds. She was a member of the Church of Christ and her interests included music, gardening, traveling, cooking, art and crafts, and writing poetry. Services will be 3:00 p.m. Saturday, July 16, 2005 at Sunset Funeral Chapel. Interment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park.
