In Memory

Sally Graham (Bush)

Here is what I posted on Facebook.

This is Craig on behalf of my mom.  Sally passed away peacefully in her sleep this morning at the memory care facility near our home in San Antonio.  We couldn't be with her in the end due to the pandemic, but I was allowed to go in and see her one last time after she passed.  Although it is painful to lose a loved one, we are grateful that she is finally at peace.  In many ways, we lost her to Alzheimer's disease so many years ago.  She battled so many illnesses, but in the end it appears that she was brought down by coronavirus over the last week.  We are still waiting for the testing to confirm though.  Fortunately, she didn't suffer like so many others with this virus.  She was already ill and slept through most of it.

My mom would never want to put family and friends in harms way, so we will have some form of non-traditional ceremony in her remembrance.  I will share what I can virtually, and maybe we will have something more formal when the world is back to normal.  I will provide more information on how to share expressions of sympathy very soon.  Please also help me get the word out to those who may not be on Facebook.

My mom was a teacher.  She taught me the value of learning, and she taught me that it was continuous.  She taught me to respect others...all others.  She taught me to know when to hold my tongue, but that may have been through my observation and not intentional!  She taught me to learn from my mistakes, and she forgave so many of them.  I owe her so much.  We will miss you mom.

I am so sorry to hear of Sally's passing.  I lost my  husband to Alzheimer's, too.  It is a terrible disease to have happen to you or a loved one.  As was said in the note above, you lose them long before their last breath.  Again, I am so sorry to hear about such a wonderful woman like your Mom.  Cynthia Halliday Harris

Sally and I date back to kindergarten.  Through the years we shared time together in first, second and third grades, then in junior high school at Hamiln and our years together at Ray.  We shared time together at slumber parties with friends and M&M's, then went in different directions for college but connected again when our son as a 7th grader, was bussed to Cunningham Jr. High where she was on the faculty.  In more recent years, we were connected once again through a group of Ray friends who still meet once a month for lunch.  We were sad when sickness and relocation took her away.  Special memories of a long time friend!

Sally and I reconnected while working on our RHS 20th reunion.  It was so much fun, we continued for several reunions more!  When I was diagnosed with cancer years after Sally was, I sought her counsel on many things connected with that disease and treatment.  She was so kind, checking on me and even sent an adorable hat with "Chic Chick" on it, which I still have!  Craig, you and your family are in my prayers.

Sally, Melvin and I have been friends forever, especially Sally, because we were in Kindergarten,Fisher Elementary, Hamlin and Ray. She was always the kindest and most fun person I ever knew. So happy I got to spend time with them in Blanco the last few years! God Bless!

Dear Craig and family,

It's always so hard to know what to say at a time like this  and I know I'm not telling you anything you don't already know, but I have never known anyone like Sally.  She was a warrior and was admired by many, including me.  She fought her way through many years of various diseases and shared her knowledge freely with anyone that asked for it or needed it.   There were a few I was aware of and probably many I wasn't.

I'm very happy to have known Sally and I'm happier to know that she didn't suffer from the virus like so many have............I think she must have just slipped off to join Melvyn.  They seemed to be a couple made for each other.  Nothing made her happier than to be with Melvyn and her family .................well, maybe her two little granddaughters..........they were definitely her little princesses.

Our get togethers will not be the same without Sally and Melvyn.  They will be missed by all who knew them.

May God hold you and your family close during this fragile time.

Sincerely,

Kathy Nesbitt Smith (Ray '60)
