Dan Purcell, an assistant coach on Ray High School's 1959 state championship football team, died Friday. He was 92.

Purcell was an assistant coach under Bill Stages when the school opened in 1950 and was still on staff when the Texans won their state championship.

He became the school's second head coach in 1965.

Purcell led the Texans for three seasons and left coaching in 1967, teaching at Ray for 19 more years before retiring in 1986 as the last of the school's original faculty.

He served in the United State Marine Corps in the V-12 program and was a member of the University of Houston's first football team before transferring to Texas A&I in Kingsville where he earned all-conference honors as a senior.

Purcell was a member of the W.B. Ray Texans Hall of Fame and was remembered for always attending Ray High School class reunions to catch up with his former players and students.

A rosary service will be at 7 p.m. March 6 at St. Pius Catholic Church. A Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. March 7.  A military burial will follow at Seaside Memorial Park.
